Welcome to Shidler Telephone Company
Shidler Telephone is based in Shidler, Oklahoma and serves the towns of Shidler, Wynona, Webb City, Grainola and Foraker in Rural Osage County. Shidler Telephone Company is the 7th smallest of the 35 independent telephone companies in Oklahoma and is proud to still be a family-owned business. Like most small family businesses, the office was in the same structure as the living quarters until 1989. In 1992 a new office was built which includes a customer service window, offices and a switch room for equipment.
Shidler Telephone Company was founded in 1922 by C.O. White, great grandfather of the current President, John White. At that time of incorporation it was the Wynona Telephone Company. The Shidler exchange was in the process of being purchased. Upon the death of Mr. C.O. White, later in 1922, his wife Ida became President of the Company. In 1939 Webb City was acquired and converted to dial service - being the first town in Osage County to have dial telephone service. In July 1945 the Grainola and Foraker exchanges were purchased from A.C. Arnold. Switch rooms were built (date) to house equipment for these two towns.
Magneto service was in use until 1946 for Wynona, 1952 for Foraker and Grainola and 1955 in Shidler when dial service went into effect. I.J. White, son of the founder became President of the Company in 1967 after being affiliated with the company since 1932. His wife Myrtle managed the office and switchboard. In April 1989, their son Marvin White because President and in October 1990 John White, who is the fourth generation of the White family, became President.
A loan was acquired from the Rural Utility Services in 1999 to install underground cable which provided digital services. The switch was upgraded from an XY Step Switch in 1992 to a Mitel GX digital switch which was replaced in 2007 with a Coppercom Softswitch. All the lines have been converted to fiber optic and copper cable which enables DSL and internet service to be offered to all customers. Shidler Telephone Internet, LLC became a subsidiary of Shidler Telephone Company in 2006 when they began offering Broadband DSL services.
